Eat almonds daily

Reasons almonds should be a part of your daily routine

From being great for skin to helping you have a happy heart, almonds have a lot of great qualities and they should be a part of your daily routine.

Since time immemorial, we have been listening that almonds are great for health. Every day, we should have some dry fruits. Having those either directly or soaking them in water for some time and removing the outer layer and then eating almonds is great.

We use almonds in our kitchen a lot. From adding them in kheer to making badam ka halwa or drinking badam flavoured milk or simply having almond milk, almonds are a big part of our lives and rightly so. Today, we are going to give you three science-backed reasons that prove they should be a part of our life.

Let’s first talk about the nutritional value of them. They give you fibre, protein, fat, vitamin E, manganese, magnesium and they also have some amount of copper and vitamin B2.

Almonds should be a part of your life

  1. Can give you great skin.

Almonds are a very good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E belongs to the family of fat-soluble antioxidants which helps protect the cell from oxidative damage. Meaning intake of these is great if you want healthy and supple skin.

The vitamin E in almonds can also protect you from heart diseases. A lot of studies have proved that.

2. Almonds can also help control the blood sugar level

Almonds have a lesser amount of carbs but a high amount of healthy fats and fibre. That is exactly why they are perfect for people who have diabetes. The magnesium that is present in almonds is one of the key factors in controlling the blood sugar levels.

3. They can help you lower cholesterol level

A high amount of bad cholesterol aka LDL lipoproteins in the blood can result in heart diseases. Some studies have proved that almonds can lower the LDL levels, saving your heart.

Apart from these reasons, they also taste delicious.

In today’s edition of making cooking simple for you, we share a super-simple recipe for masala pomfret. Check it out below.

Who doesn’t like eating fish? It is light, full of protein and can be made in many different ways. Thinking about the different ways of making fish, we got a craving to eat one. So, we decided to wear our chef’s hat and do some experimenting.

We had a fresh piece of pomfret in our refrigerator, so we made masala pomfret. And to say the least, it was a short trip to heaven. This one is a no fuss, no muss recipe that will become your new favourite.

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make masala pomfret

Pomfret fish 1 pcs
Garlic8 cloves
SaltAs per taste
Red chilliAs per taste
Roasted gram flour 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder1 tsp
Coriander powder1 tsp
Mustard oil 2-3 tsp
Banana leaves1-2 pcs
Butter1 tsp

Follow this method to make masala pomfret

Start with cleaning the fish. Once done, prepare the marination for the dish. Chop the garlic cloves finely to make a paste. After this, add salt and red chilli powder in the garlic paste. Then add roasted gram flour, turmeric powder and coriander powder. Finish the paste by adding a few drops of mustard oil.

Now, before coating the fish with the paste, grease it with mustard oil. It’s now time to wrap the fish in banana leaves. Wash the leaves and cut them in equal squares. Before wrapping the fish, heat the leaf a bit. This will protect the leaves from tearing apart.

After you have wrapped the fish with banana leaves, tie a thread around and put it in the refrigerator for one hour. It’s now time to cook the fish. There are two ways of doing this. Here, we have cooked the fish in the pan.

Heat the butter in a pan and put in the fish after unwrapping it and removing the banana leaves. Cook the fish for 3-4 minutes. You can also cook the fish in a steamer. Just put the wrapped wish in a steamer for 15-20 minutes and it will be ready!

We made some really delicious and gooey chocolate chip cookies.

The taste of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth is something that words cannot do justice to. You have to have it to know what magical ride your tastebuds go through on devouring a decadent chocolate chip cookie.

So, without wasting any more time, let’s dive into the recipe.

Chocolate chip cookies – Recipe

Brown sugar3/4 cup
White sugar1/2 cup
Salt1/2 tsp
Butter (Melted)1/2 cup
Vanilla essence2 tsp
All-purpose flour 1 1/2 cup
Baking soda1/2 tsp
Chocolate chipsAs per requirement

In a bowl, mix the brown sugar with the white sugar, salt and melted butter. Give them a nice mix and then, add the egg. You will have to move the whisker thoroughly to mix everything evenly. Once done, add vanilla essence and mix again.

Using a sifter, add the all-purpose flour and baking soda in the bowl. Using a sifter helps mix the dry ingredients and also removes any unwanted clumps. Use a spatula to mix everything together. Do not mix too much because that will make the cookies hard.

Finally, when you have the right consistency of the dough, add chocolate chips. You can go crazy and add as many as you want. If you do not have chocolate chips, just add small chunks of any chocolate.

Now, leave the batter to chill. A minimum of half an hour of chilling is necessary. The more you leave the dough in the fridge, the better the cookies will be. For the most heavenly taste, leave them overnight.

While your dough is being chilled, preheat your over at 180 degrees Celsius. Put parchment paper on the baking tray and scoop some of that dough and put small balls of the dough on the tray.

Let the cookies bake for 10-15 minutes. After that, take them out of the oven and let them cool.

Enjoy these delicious cookies.

Food mistakes to avoid

5 dinner mistakes you should always avoid

We binge on the most unhealthy meal in the night. Listed below are five dinner mistakes that you should always avoid. Read on…

We eat breakfast in a hurry because we have to get to somewhere, we eat lunch in a hush-hush manner because something or the other is happening in our life. For most of us, dinner is the only meal that we enjoy to the fullest. But, not many know that it is the only meal that you should enjoy the least.

By this, we don’t mean that you should not eat tasty food, what we mean is that dinner should be light and healthy. Thanks to the Internet, one can get recipes for a variety of tasty and healthy dishes online. But still, there are other things that one needs to take care of.

Here, we share with you five dinner mistakes that you should always avoid.

Never opt for a heavy meal

You must have often heard people saying that breakfast should be the heaviest meal of the day and dinner should be the lightest. This is because after eating dinner, you go off to bed in a short span of time. So, if you eat something heavy, your body will not get time to break down the food. This can make you lethargic and will not help if you are trying to lose weight.

Say no to eating late

For the very same reason that we shared above, you should not eat late dinners. If you eat early, your body will get proper time to break down the food and release the energy. You will also be able to consume the energy before you go off to sleep.

Midnight snacks are out of the question

Let’s be honest, midnight snacks are delicious no matter what you eat, but eating such meals can harm your body. This can increase your blood sugar level and can lead to acidity and heart diseases.

Never eat a meal full of carbs

Dinner mistakes to avoid
Credit: Pexels

You should avoid eating refined carbs for dinner, however, if you really want, you can eat good carbs that your body will not take too much time to break down. You should also avoid eating fatty foods.

Always avoid eating salt

If you wish to lose weight, then you should really cut back on salt, especially during dinner time. The body’s metabolism is the slowest in night, which is why people always advise to not eat too much salt in dinner. However, if you don’t follow this, excess consumption of salt can be harmful for your body.

For the next step, add four and a half cup of all-purpose flour and olive oil to this and knead the dough. Remember your dough should be soft otherwise, the pretzels will not be soft. The dough should neither be too hard or too soft.

Once the dough is cooked, let it rest for one hour. After one hour, you will see that the dough has doubled in size. Take it out of the pan and divide it into 6-8 equal pieces. Roll each piece in a thin line and make the shape of a pretzel. Best part-you can go as crazy with the shape as you like, make a flower or an animal, whatever you wish for.

Preheat your oven at 230 degrees Celsius.

For the next step, in four cups of water, add the baking soda. Once it comes to a boil, put a pretzel in the mixture and after 10-15 seconds take it out. Repeat the process for all the pretzels.

Now, either put a parchment paper on your baking dish or lather it with oil because the pretzels will stick to the bottom. Put it in the oven for 10 mins and you will get freshly baked pretzels.

Enjoy with mustard sauce.

Time to try some Indian gin

GinGin: India’s first hemp craft gin! You read that right

GinGin is a homegrown gin which has some interesting ingredients. Read on to know more about it in detail.

When it comes to beer, rum or whisky, Indians have pretty much decoded how to make them. But when it comes to Gin, we are still learning, slowly and steadily coming up with some of the greatest products.

Another Indian gin which is made using all Indian products is about to hit the market. GinGin is a Goa-based gin brand, which will soon be available on the shelves. We can’t wait to try it out.

Let’s learn a little more about GinGin

The Gin is gluten-free as it is distilled many times. The homegrown brand has used everything Indian to make the liquor. From the ingredients to the packaging, we mean everything. Talk about being local. It is also the first Indian gin to use the vapour infusion method during the making. That introduces the subtle and intricate flavours of its ingredients.

The packaging is also gorgeous. Just a clear simple bottle with cork lock. The best part about the packaging is that there are markings telling you how much gin you are left with and when it is time to buy a new bottle.

Ingredients of GinGin

But what is most interesting about the alcohol is its ingredients. It is made of Juniper Berries which are a common ingredient. The second ingredient is coriander that adds a citrus flavour to it. The third one is dalchini to add those earthy flavours. Next are rosemary and lemongrass along with lavender, caraway seeds and blue pea flowers.

However, it is the final ingredient that is a surprise. They use hemp in the it. You can read that again. Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species. It is non-intoxicating and is grown specifically for industrial uses.

The makers of GinGin, in a post, said, “Hemp Seeds. Now now now, we are not playing to the fad of hemp gins, we do truly love the botanicals in our gin all equally, and hemp being a part of it is no different. Hemp, as we know, has been there for thousands of years in our own Indian Ayurveda. It is often is cultivated for either industrial use to make ropes and fabric or for the use as a superfood. Hemp seeds are also a great source of vitamin E and minerals, such as phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc. Hemp in our gin brings in a new almost savoury, lingering taste that leaves a lasting mouthfeel and slowly introduces you to the other peculiar botanicals, in the gin.”

GinGin is the first Indian hemp craft gin.

The many uses of condensed milk

Condensed milk is the go-to ingredient to make your dessert game strong

In the world of desserts, condensed milk has many uses. Here, we tell you how you can use this wonder ingredient.

When it comes to baking, we always wish to get well-risen cakes and perfectly crumbly pies. But the ingredients not always work as per our demand. Sometimes the sugar is too much or the baking powder is too little. Beating the eggs is also a big problem.

Won’t it be amazing if we get one ingredient that can replace sugar and eggs and can give us a perfect batter every time we plan to make a special treat for our loved ones?

If you are a baking aficionado, then you would have guessed that we are talking about condensed milk. Easily available in tin packages in the market, condensed milk is a type of cow milk from which water has been removed (roughly 60 per cent of it). The sweetened condensed milk, which you usually get, has sugar added in it.

Now, while making any type of cake, you can replace sugar and eggs with condensed milk. To make the basic batter, you can add condensed milk in melted butter and add all-purpose flour and baking powder. Over and above, you can add flavours such as vanilla essence or chocolate powder as per your wish.

More so, you can also use it in any sweet batter for a bread. You can also use it to make toffee or caramel at home.

Now, there are two ways of doing it. You can either put the packed tin in a pressure cooker and let it whistle 2-3 times or you can pour the condensed milk in a pan and cook it on low flame till it combines and becomes toffee. With this, you’ll be able to make banoffee pie at home.

Adding a pinch of salt in the caramel, you can also make salted caramel topping for your desserts. You can even combine this caramel with dried coconut powder, vanilla essence and cardamom powder to make yummy ladoos

Not just this, you can also use this wonder ingredient to make truffles. With the help of condensed milk, you can make lemon tarts by mixing it with whipped cream and a bit of lemon juice. This is a quick eggless dessert that will become your new favourite.

There are many other uses of condensed milk in the dessert world. For now, we’ll leave you with these dishes to try.

Mushroom soup - Recipe

Mushroom soup that tastes better than restaurant – RECIPE

Try this delicious recipe for mushroom soup that is dairy-free, tastes better than the restaurant and is extremely easy to prepare.

Soup is one of the most comforting food that you can have. It can play the part of a first-course meal or be a complete meal in itself. The versatility of the soup depends on your mood. However, the versatility of soup does not end here. The best part about this meal that brings comfort to your soul is that you can make it using whatever is available in your fridge.

Today, we made mushroom soup. A lot of places serve really heavy mushroom soup that has a lot of cream, however, the one that we made at home is equally delicious if not more and has no dairy involved. This is a simple gharelu mushroom soup, which will blow your mind.

So without any further delay, let’s dive right into the recipe.

Mushroom soup recipe

Butter1 tbsp
Olive oil2 tbsp
Onion (chopped)1 pcs
Garlic cloves (chopped)4 cloves
flour2 tbsp
Water3 large cups
SaltAccording to taste
PepperAccording to taste

For the first step, we will add butter in a non-stick pan. Immediately after the butter, we will add olive oil. Remember, this has to be done on low flame. We add the olive oil so that the butter does not burn.

Once the oil heats up a little, add onions and garlic. Once the onions turn translucent, that is when we add the mushrooms. Now the mushrooms, once cooked, get smaller in size and leave some water, so don’t be alarmed when that happens.

Once you think the mushrooms are cooked, add flour and saute for 10 minutes. When you feel that you can start smelling the flour, add water. Increase the flame and let it boil. Cover the pan and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.

For the next step, take some of the mushroom chunks out in a separate bowl. Using a hand blender or a regular blender, churn everything together and you will get a creamy mushroom soup. Add the mushrooms back into the pan. We did this so that you get chunks of mushroom while drinking the soup. You can avoid this step if you want to.

Finally, add salt and pepper according to your taste. If you want the soup to be more creamy, you can add half water and half milk to the soup instead of adding just water.

Freshly baked garlic bread would taste divine with the soup. Read its recipe here.

Add a few drops of olive oil and cover the dough with it. Finally, keep the dough aside for two hours. While the dough is resting, the yeast will do its magic.

During this time, we will prepare the delicious mixture that will give the actual taste to the garlic bread.

Melt two tablespoons go butter. In the butter, add three finely chopped garlic cloves, one teaspoon of oregano along with one teaspoon of peri peri. Mix it well.

Now, we come back to the dough. Due to the activated yeast, the dough will double up in size within two hours. Once that happens, take that dough out and knead it again. Once the dough has the bouncy texture, with the help of a rolling pin, spread the dough in a circle. Do not make it too thin.

With the help of a brush, spread the liquid butter mixture all over the dough. Fold it in half as shown in the video and with the help of your fingers close the sides. Put the dough on a baking tray that has been layered with butter.

Cover the top of the dough with the remaining butter mixture and sprinkle some more oregano and chilli flakes. Use a knife to make cuts on the dough and put it in a preheated oven for 7 minutes. You will have the best freshly baked garlic bread.

It is so easy that you can prepare it any time. Also, check out the recipe for focaccia bread.

Dark chocolate100 gms
Butter200 gms
White sugarHalf cup
Brown sugarOne/fourth cup
Eggs3 pcs
SaltHalf tsp
Vanilla essenceOne tsp
All-purpose flourHalf cup
Chocolate powderOne/fourth cup

On a double boiler, first, melt dark chocolate with one tablespoon of butter. This time, we used the 99 per cent dark chocolate by Amul. Once they both melt and mix properly, remove the bowl from the heat and let it come to room temperature.

Till that is happening, in another bowl, mix white and brown sugar. In this mixture, add the eggs one-by-one and mix thoroughly after each egg is added. Once that is done, add salt and vanilla essence. Mix nicely.

For the next step, add the melted chocolate to the bowl and mix everything together. To this add the all-purpose flour and chocolate powder through a sift. Fold all the ingredients nicely. Do not use a whisker for this process. Mix the batter for two more minutes.

Grease a glass square container with butter and pour the batter in it. Give it two taps to let everything settle and finally, put the batter in the microwave for four minutes.

Your gooey brownies are ready. You can eat them right away, but a better way to enjoy these is by letting the brownies cool for 10 minutes and then cut the pieces with a knife and enjoy with ice cream.

breakfast mistakes

Avoid these mistakes during Breakfast if you are trying to lose weight

If you are trying to lose weight, these are the four things that you should avoid doing your breakfast. Read on to know more.

Two things are extremely important when you are trying to lose weight or become healthy. As important as we think exercise is, eating the right food is also extremely crucial. Workout and eating the right food go hand-in-hand when it comes to weight loss.

Mind you, we said ‘eating’ the right and not skipping it. We have heard time and again that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it sets the tone of your entire day. Today, we are going to talk about the importance of correct breakfast when you are trying to shed a few extra kilos.

Do not skip breakfast

This is the worst mistake that you can do. Skipping breakfast can give you hunger pangs and headaches. It can make you hungry to an extent that you crave for junk food, which defies the purpose of eating clean to lose weight. Even if you are having breakfast a little late, make sure you eat a controlled portion of the meal and not hog on large sizes of unhealthy food.

Avoid having just tea or coffee in breakfast

Pexels: Chevanon Photography

Let’s be honest, we love these drinks. And, nobody is saying that you cannot have it in breakfast. We are just saying that just don’t have coffee as your first meal. The high amount of caffeine can make you anxious and too much coffee can be bad for your health.

Do not Eat quickly

We know breakfast is one meal that you eat quickly because well, you have to get on with your day. This is another reason that you end up eating too much. When you are just hogging on food continuously, your brain doesn’t get the timely signal from your stomach to stop eating. As a result, you end up eating way more than required and it never lets you lose weight.

Eating Parathas for breakfast – Don’t

Breakfast is the first meal of the day and if you only consume carbs during that meal, it is a problem. We love our paranthas and chole bhature but your first meal should include some proteins and fats too.

Even if you have a perfect loaf of bread or a well-baked cake, you still have one big challenge ahead of you. It is how to cut the baked produce into equal pieces. A knife definitely doesn’t do the trick. Next time when you face the same problem, just floss things up. Take a string of an unflavoured floss and use it to cut the cake or the bread.

The mixing bowl that wobbles too much

Every time you whisk the batter, the bowl keeps running away? This not only spills the batter all over but also wastes a lot of time. Keep the flame off during this time. If you don’t have a hand blender, use a regular blender but make sure that you churn the hot soup in small portions otherwise it will come out of the blender.

Once all the vegetables are smushed and you get the consistency of soup, add salt and black pepper, according to taste. You can also add peri peri powder for that extra kick.

This soup tastes best if your toast some garlic bread with it.

Air-Fried chicken momos

All-purpose flour2 cups
Ginger-garlic paste1 tsp
Green chillies (chopped)2
Boneless chicken250 gm
Spring onion (Finely chopped)4
Soya sauce1 tsp
SaltAccording to taste
Black pepperAccording to taste
Olive oil As per requirement

Let’s start with making the dough. For that, in all-purpose flour, mix one tsp of salt and one tbsp of oil. Mix all the ingredients nicely.

When mixed, start adding water slowly and make a dough. The consistency of the dough should not be too soft or too hard. Once you get to that consistency, keep the dough aside and let it rest for 20 – 30 minutes.

For this put the boneless chicken in the grinder and give it a nice whirl. Once the chicken is smooth, add one tsp of olive oil, one tsp salt and pepper, half a teaspoon of roasted ginger garlic paste and mix.

Once that is done, add the chopped chillies, spring onion and soya sauce to it. You filling is prepared. Unlike the vegetarian momos, we are not going to cook the chicken filling. Instead, the chicken gets cooked while it is being air fried or steamed.

Now, come back to dough and knead it again for a minute. Take small balls of the dough and with the help of a rolling pin make a very thin round circles.

Put the filling on the circle. Slightly wet the sides of the circle with your fingers. Take the outer part of the circle and start joining the two ends in a criss-cross manner as shown in the video. Finally, put them in the air fryer and after 10 minutes, your momos will be ready.

You can deep fry them as well, but we were inclined towards a little healthier version, so we opted for the air fryer.

If you want to eat steamed momos, you can put these in steamer for 10 minutes.

Condensed milk (milkmaid)1 tin
Digestive biscuits (McVitie’s)1 pkt
Butter10 gm
Banana 2 pcs
Cream100 gms
Dark chocolateAs per requirement

Here’s, how you can make the super simple dessert at home

Take a sealed tin of condensed milk and put it in a pressure cooker. Make sure that you submerge the tin completely in water. Turn the flame on and let it whistle 2-3 times. Once the steam is out, take the tin and put it in an ice bath. This is probably the simplest way of making dulce de leche.

Following this, take a pack of digestive biscuits and crush them. You can either do this by putting the biscuits in a grinder or can do it with your hands. Once crumbled, add melted butter and mix well. This will make for the base of your pie.

Take the biscuit mix and put it on a greased tin baking tray. Put the tray in the oven for 5-10 minutes, depending on how brown you want the base to be, at 180 degrees.

Once the base is ready, open the condensed milk tin and pour the toffee on the top of the biscuit crumb. Put the baking tray in the refrigerator and let it set.

Now, take a break for some tips! If you don’t want to bake the base of your pie, you can simply put the biscuit mix in the baking tray and put it in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours.

And for the second tip, if the condensed milk doesn’t turn into toffee in the pressure cooker and you have opened the tin, then you can just pour the liquid in a non-stick pan and cook it on low flame.

Coming back to the banoffee pie…

Take the bananas and slice them evenly. Decorate the pieces on the top of toffee and keep it aside. Following this, take fresh cream and start whisking it. After what will feel life a lifetime of whisking, you will get whipped cream.

Spread the whipped cream on the top of the bananas evenly. For the final step, take a piece of dark chocolate and grate it. Use the grated chocolate to top the pie.

Treat your loved ones to this amazing pie while sharing amusing anecdotes.

Start your day with a glass of lukewarm water

Drinking lukewarm water in the morning on an empty stomach has a lot of benefits. It helps your body flush out toxins and helps your digestive system function properly. It also increases the metabolism, making weight loss easier. You can also squeeze half a lemon in the water and make it your morning drink.

Control your carbs for weight loss

When you cut back on the carbs, your body starts burning the fat for energy instead of the carbs. Not just that, this will also help lower your insulin level. Going low on carbs will help you shed the unnecessary water weight.

Habits for weight loss

Don’t skip a meal

If you think cutting on meals can help you lose weight, then you are wrong. You should never skip a meal, we repeat, NEVER skip a meal. Not only you should have three proper meals, but you can also add an additional fourth meal if you feel hungry in the evening. Starving yourself will do no good.

Don’t Eat anything after 7 pm

It is always beneficial to have early dinner. This gives your body time to breakdown the food by the time you go to sleep. Apart from helping you lose weight, this will also help you sleep better. Eating an early dinner is also good for your heart.

Say no to midnight snacks

We all love midnight treats, yes we do, but eating in the middle of the night is the worst thing you can do to your body. When you eat late in the night, your body’s system has slowed down and it is unable to break the food down, which leads to weight gain. It also increases your blood sugar levels and the risk of heart diseases.
